Met Gala 2014: Charles James

One of the most glamorous events of the year, the Met Gala, took place on Monday. Below is the roundup of my favorites and to compare, the least favorites. This year’s event took a slightly off turn because my usual suspects (Diane Kruger, Nicole Richie, Kate Bosworth, etc.) did not show up on the fav list besides RiRi. Honestly I had to look up this year’s theme: Charles James. The designer was apparently known as “America’s First Couturier.”

Favorite If You Got Them, Flaunt Them: Rihanna in Stella McCartney and Olivia Munn in Diane von Furstenberg

Yes, Rihanna’s stomach is THAT flat and toned and Olivia Munn’s boobs are THAT perky and perfectly rounded. Both of these ladies have more to show than any other, so I applaud them to flaunt what their mamas gave them. The colors were also exquisite, the contrast of Rihanna’s white to her darker skin tone, and seriously, who can pull off that yellow besides Olivia?

Favorite Monochrome: Anne Hathaway in Calvin Klein Collection and Rachel McAdams in Ralph Lauren Collection

Even though the red on Anne blends into the red carpet, the vibrancy against her pale skin was just perfect. Rachel McAdams’ (hello, 10 year anniversary of Mean Girls represent!) pale peach color number made her so soft and dewy looking she resembled nothing of her bully character Rita from Mean Girls.

Favorite Ruff them up Ruffles: Suki Waterhouse in Burberry and Chloe Mortez in Chanel Couture

I’m not usually one for frills and ruffles but these two showed me there are exceptions. Suki Waterhouse aka Ms. The Hangover (Bradley Cooper’s current girl if you didn’t get that) looked fantastic in the subdued tone ruffles. Chloe Mortez was kickin’ ass (get it get it??) carrying off embellishments, lace, and ruffles all in one, looking cute and fresh while doing so (what I’d give to be young again so I can pull off stuff like that).

Favorite Couple: David Beckham in Ralph Lauren Black Label and Victoria Beckham in her own collection and Emma Stone in Thakoon and Andrew Garfield in Band of Outsiders

Really the Beckhams have won so many couple awards it’s sickening, but somehow they still manage to steal attention throughout the years by complimenting each other in fashion. Spidey Andrew Garfield and his girl Emma Stone were absolutely adorable on the red carpet. Special props to Emma offsetting two gorgeous shades of pink with her red hair. Incredibly glam.

Least Favorite: Lupita Nyong’o in Prada and Kate Upton in Dolce & Gabbana

Now to the not so nice. I was sad to see Lupita Nyong’o in this costume since she was having such an awesome streak of winning red carpet looks; but this one I really can’t get over. Are those feathers and rhinestones all on some kind of grid netting? This makes me confused in a way that squishes my face. And Ms. Upton…the fantasy of so many of our male population, made the wrong choice of picking this overwhelming dress. It swallowed her curves and made her look bigger in the wrong places. At least her famed cleavage still made out? Better luck next time girls.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and favorites of this year’s Met Gala in the comments section!

About Too Poor for Couture

A girl who loves fashion enough to slave away in the industry. For fun, for hobby, for inspiration, but definitely not for money (unfortunately). I don't study fashion like it's the bible nor do I know everything about it. Fashion should be fun, expressive, and effortless. Too Poor for Couture is my chronicle of fashion related thoughts, news, outfits, and randoms of a normal girl on a normal budget working un-glamorously through the fashion industry.
